Mexico Celebrates Independence - September 15-16

Posted by Luis A. De Jesus R. (Mexico City, Mexico) on 23 September 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

This was taken last week on the 16th, one of two days of Mexican celebration of its independence. The 15th is marked by a gathering at municipal squares to commemorate the cry of independence by Catholic Priest Miguel Hidalgo. The military parade follows on the 16th.

This year the Independence Cry in Morelia, Michoacan was rattled by several grenades believed to have been thrown into the crowd by drug traffickers who have resorted to the wounding and killing of innocent civilians in retaliation to the federal government's pursuit to dismantle organized crime in Mexico.
