Great image with a lot of depth! I romanticise it terribly, but this little corner of the world means so much to me. I request a photo of Churrería El Moro which is about 3 blocks south of where this photo was taken if I'm not mistaken. It's one of the last of the old time restaurants in the historical centre.

I worked with and was friends with a woman whose husband owned an popular old restaurant on Calle República de Colombia (which I ate at in 1989 before I knew her). The street vendor mafia took over that street and tried to force the restaurant out. When they resisted, he was murdered. She fled to Canada where she tried to claim refugee status (because she was scared out of her mind) and ended up working at the Mexican restaurant where I was the chef in the mid 90s. So anyway, I have a fondness for those old restaurants.

@Damon Schreiber: Damon, thanks for sharing your story. Very sad outcome for your friend, but I am not surprised. Many of those street vendors, if not all, have been moved from many parts of Centro Historico. They were not happy, but the authorities were able to force them down. They continue to be a mafia, nonetheless. So you are a chef; you do a lot of Mexican food?

I will make a note of your request and attempt to get something favorable for you --I promise. I wonder when you intend to back by these neck of the global woods. Do hope you come back and visit.

I used to be a chef. These days I do multimedia/graphics/web stuff. But I love Mexican food, although I find it complicated to prepare, so I don't cook it as often as I would like. And I've yet to find a truly satisfying Mexican restaurant in Toronto. The one I worked at was quite good and authentic though (at least I think so). Don't know when I'll be back in México, but surely I will at some point in the next few years. I can't stay away.
