To me, photography is not about displaying the beauty and perfection of a scene (though of course, that can be nice as well), but about capturing the character and every aspect of an environment, including it's dark side, the parts noone wants to see, hidden in the shadows. so i can very much relate to your fascination.
and this is a beautiful shot. the distortion works in favor of the dynamics of the composition, and the light, detail and contrast are really lovely. well done :)
